UPSE President On Relocating Child and Youth Mental Health Unit

PEI's only child and youth psychiatric unit is being moved, and the staff who work there every day are telling us the plan is not safe. Workers at the Child and Youth Psychiatric Unit have been raising concerns for months. They're being ignored.
Here's what the proposed location at the QEH actually looks like:
- No outdoor access
- No play or recreation space
- Shared bathrooms and a single shower
- No office space for frontline staff
- Located next to the adult mental health emergency department, where staff say noise from adult patients can last for hours and be overwhelming
These are kids aged 6 to 17. Kids in crisis. And the staff letter obtained by The Guardian says there is "a high potential for young patients to be exposed to traumatizing communication" from adult patients nearby.
UPSE President Karen Jackson has been clear: "It's just not a good space for kids who are in crisis."
Our members went through every proper channel. They raised concerns. They attended meetings. They were dismissed. This isn't acceptable. These are our children, our families, our community.
UPSE is calling on Health PEI to pause this plan and actually listen to the people who care for these kids every day.
